As we go further into the 21st century, the ever evolving vehicle safety features and standards are constantly reaching new heights. On the other hand, to this day injuries after a car accident remain one of the main causes of debilitating health conditions, such as chronic neck and back pain, chronic headaches and joint issues. This comes as a surprise to many of our patients and many times I have been told: “well doc, I have pulled my back many times before, but I take a Tylenol and rest for a few days and it always goes away.” The reason for this is that the amount of force that goes through your body during an impact such as a car crash can be more akin to falling off a building, or getting tackled by a football player as opposed to sleeping on an uncomfortable couch for a night. Even though the injury is to the same area, the extent of the damage may be very different. Physiotherapy after a car accident is the proven way to address such damage and ensure maximum resolution.
Gradually and methodically addressing the problems early is the best way to ensure the most favourable outcome. Research consistently shows that delayed intervention directly correlates with prolonged disability recovery times as well as potential for the injuries to become chronic. In other words the longer you wait to start treatment, the longer it may take to recover, and the higher the chances of the issue becoming persistent.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN INJURED IN A CAR ACCIDENT
At first you may not feel much after experiencing an injury. Adrenalin is high and inflammation has not set in yet. Oftentimes the problems seem to develop over the 24-48 hours after the event. And the situation may remain unstable for the first 2 weeks, where some of the issues may seem to improve while others worsen or new pain appears. If you have been involved in a car accident and are experiencing any or a combination of the following symptoms, you should seek professional care:
- Neck Pain
- Back Pain
- Stiffness in Neck, Back or other joints
- Difficulties with movement
- Problems with balance
- Problems remembering things
- Light or Noise sensitivity
